Off-duty officer fatally shoots 2 robbery suspects in Newark
Sandra Bookman has the latest on the fatal shootings in Newark.

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Authorities say an off-duty Jersey City police officer fatally shot two men during a robbery attempt in Newark Sunday night.

The police-involved shooting happened at 195 South 6th Street just after 11:30 p.m.

The officer said he was approached by two armed men who intended to rob him, and he shot them.

The identities of the two men have not yet been released.

The officer was taken to University Medical Center to be treated for trauma.

A weapon was recovered at scene.

The shooting being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The Jersey City Police Department released a statement:

"We are thankful that our detective, who was a victim of an attempted armed robbery, is OK and want to thank the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor for their assistance in this ongoing investigation."
