HILLSBOROUGH, NC -- Three people, including a girl from Brooklyn, were killed in a head-on collision overnight in North Carolina, according to Highway Patrol.

It happened early Sunday on I-85 near the area where it joins I-40 in Orange County at around 3 a.m.

Troopers said a Jeep Wrangler driven by 20-year-old Chandler Michael Kania crossed into oncoming traffic near mile-marker 163.

Kania collided with a Suzuki with four people in it. Three of the four people inside the Suzuki died on impact.

The driver of the Suzuki was identified as 49-year-old Felicia Harris from Charlotte. The front seat passenger and a 6-year-old child in the backseat were also killed. The 6-year-old child was identified as Janiece Smith from Brooklyn, N.Y.

The third victim has not yet been identified.

The fourth passenger was rushed to UNC Hospital with serious injuries. Kania was also taken to UNC with non-life threatening injuries. As of Sunday evening, Kania was no longer listed as a patient at UNC.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Because Kania is only 20 years old, the Alcohol Law Enforcement is also investigating.

No charges have been filed yet.
