NEW YORK -- A New York City couple accused of battering a partially paralyzed woman and controlling her finances for more than a year has been sentenced to over a decade in prison.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Friday that Patrick Donovan was sentenced to 12 years in behind bars and Mae Washington to 11 years. Brown says both pleaded guilty earlier this month to assault.

Their lawyers haven't immediately responded to messages Friday night.

Brown says the victim was bleeding from her head and had broken bones when found huddled on the floor in a locked room in the couple's home in March 2012. Prosecutors say the room had no mattress or bed.

Brown has said the victim turned over all her income to Washington because she feared the couple.
