UNION SQUARE (WABC) -- A man suffered a serious leg injury after being struck by an FDNY fire truck that was on its way to a gas emergency, police say.

The 34-year-old was crossing near East 15 Street and Irving Place around 8 p.m. Saturday. According to the NYPD, the pedestrian had the 'do not walk' sign, and proceeded to cross anyway.

One eyewitness said that when he looked out his window, he saw firefighters tending to a man pinned under the truck.

"The man got under the truck right away. They backed up the truck, and he was there," said Michael Penkwitz.

According to police, the fire truck had lights and sirens on.

The man was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Investigators were still on the scene late Saturday night, and spent several hours interviewing firefighters and collecting evidence. The identity of the man who was hit has not yet been released.
