INWOOD, N.Y. (WABC) -- One pedestrian was killed and another was hurt when they were struck while trying to cross the street in Inwood Tuesday night.
It happened at the intersection of 209th Street and Ninth Avenue around 10:30 p.m.
A 1999 Ford Explorer was westbound on West 207th Street when the two pedestrians tried to run across the street mid-block. The Explorer braked, but could not stop, and hit both pedestrians. After the initial impact, both pedestrians were thrown into the eastbound lanes of West 207th Street, where they were struck by a 2004 Toyota sedan.
A 24-year-old man was run over by the driver side tires, and a 35-year-old man was struck by the driver side fender.
Both men were found with head and body injuries. They were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead. The 35-year-old is in serious condition.
Both vehicles' drivers remained on the scene, and there were no arrests. The investigation continues. The identity of the deceased is pending family notification.
207th Street between Ninth Avenue and 10th Avenue was closed to traffic due to the active police investigation.
