EAST PATCHOGUE (WABC) -- A dog that went missing on Long Island the day before last week's storm is now back home safe and sound.

Cody, a 6-year old Shih Tzu mix, escaped from his home in East Patchogue, according to Lost & Found Pets of Long Island.

He was outdoors for six days on his own, surviving the storm and the frigid conditions.

Cody's owner Amy says he was found and brought back home Sunday morning.

The dog was spotted by a man who lives about a mile away. Cody was discovered under the deck of a house where no one had been home, and the family was apparently away.

The man had spotted flyers in the neighborhood that Cody's owners had put up and recognized him.

The dog, though dirty and a bit skinnier, seeemed no worse for wear and had no apparent signs of frostbite, but will be taken to the vet to be checked out.
