Seal rescued in Queens released into water in Hampton Bays

HAMPTON BAYS (WABC) -- A seal rescued in Queens is getting a second chance.

On Saturday, the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation released "Birdie", a female gray seal pup, back into the water in Hampton Bays.

When the seal was spotted by a local beach walker and rescued back in April in Far Rockaway, she had a swollen flipper and respiratory congestion.

After three months in rehabilitation, she's now healthy and ready to make her way home.

Over 100 well-wishers and adoptive family members were at the beach to see her off.
