SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia police have arrested a man in the death and sexual assault of his 1-year-old stepson.

Police were called to the 1700 block of Conestoga Street in Southwest Philadelphia around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for the report of an unresponsive child.

Arriving officers were met by a 24-year-old man who told them the 1-year-old child was upstairs and unresponsive.

Officers, along with firefighters, went upstairs in the home and found the infant lying on the floor without a pulse.

Medics transported the 1-year-old to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the attending physician noted multiple bruises on the child and signs of sexual assault.

The 24-year-old man, who told police he was the child's stepfather, was taken to the Special Victims Unit for further investigation. He was subsequently arrested.

The man faces charges of: Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Rape, Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse; Endangering the Welfare of a Child and related offenses.

His name will be released upon completion of his processing, police say.
