BUSHWICK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A man has been arrested after a woman who was five months pregnant was found dead in a Brooklyn apartment early Saturday.

Police say they responded to the Bushwick Houses on Flushing Avenue around 1:30 a.m., finding 20-year-old Savannah Rivera dead on the floor with severe trauma to her body.

Another woman was found inside the apartment with lacerations to her head, and that woman's 4-year-old child was present but unharmed.

Emergency responders went to the building after the surviving woman asked a passing driver to take her to the hospital, and he instead called 911.

Police arrested 34-year-old Jerry Brown and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

"This was a brutal, terrible, vicious attack," NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper said. "Both victims suffered multiple, deep lacerations."

Police say they found an ax in the apartment, but it is unclear if that was the murder weapon.

Authorities will not say the connection of the man in custody to the two women, but they do say it was not a random attack.

The victim's family believes she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and are heartbroken knowing she left behind a young son.

The motive of the attack is unknown.

Brown was at a hospital in police custody.
