NEWARK (WABC) -- A suspect is in the hospital after being shot and wounded Sunday morning by a police officer in Newark.[br /][br /]The shooting followed a robbery and police chase in the city's South Ward.[br /][br /]According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, A 25-year veteran Newark police lieutenant was on patrol in uniform and in a marked SUV when he was alerted by a woman that she had been robbed at gunpoint.[br /][br /]Police followed five suspects in a car by tracking a stolen cell phone, and after a short pursuit, the car struck a house.[br /][br /][post ID="653294" /][br /][br /]The five then ran from the vehicle, three of them of South 6th Street.[br /][br /][instagram SRC="[br /]https://instagram.com/p/1YZP3DxnvT/" /][br /][br /]Authorities say one of the suspects who had a gun turned toward the lieutenant, who fired one round, striking the suspect in the chest area.[br /][br /][twitter ID="587379954221973504" /][br /][br /]In Exclusive surveillance obtained by Eyewitness News, you can see three men, who were riding in a silver Lexus, take off on foot. One suspect was wearing a white shirt, a second in black both ducked behind parked cars. A third suspect took off running across the street. Right behind the suspects were two Newark police officers in a car. With their guns drawn, one officer chases one suspect, while others, also with their weapons out, follow the pair behind the parked cars.[br /][br /]"I heard a cop say 'drop your gun', and then bang!" said eyewitness Matt Suleymanof. [br /][br /]The suspect was taken to University Hospital. Two others were apprehended, while two remain at large. The lieutenant was taken to the hospital for observation.[br /][br /]A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting. The vehicle was reported stolen from the East Ward of Newark. [br /][br /]Police are trying to determine whether the Newark case is linked to a string of other robberies.[br /][br /]"We also have a host of other robberies that occurred in Bloomfield and the contiguous cities of Newark that were are looking at right now," said Anthony Ambrose, Chief of Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. "One of the victims was either an off duty or retired Essex county sheriffs officer. That's what brought us to this area, because of her cell phone."[br /][br /]The vehicle struck a house at the corner of 13th Avenue and South 6th Street, belonging to Carolyn Dickerson. [br /][br /]"All I know, it was like a flash - he hit and then he ran," Dickerson says, "Terrible, horrible - it's ridiculous." [br /][br /]
