Up Close: Presidential race enters home stretch
NEW YORK (WABC) -- The end is near for what seems like an endless presidential election.
Certainly one of the most bizarre, and in so many ways - disappointing.
Substantive talk about issues has been supplanted too often by allegations of sexual abuse and by revelations from hacked and stolen internal emails between staffers.
And now the FBI is taking another look at emails from Hillary Clinton's private server.
How did we get to this point?
And perhaps more importantly - are we stuck here - no matter who's elected a week from Tuesday?
Is "standoff" now our status quo?
This week we talk to New York's junior United States Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, who replaced Hillary Clinton in the Senate, and is a Clinton supporter.
Also, the Justice Department's civil rights division in Washington is now taking over what had been a local investigation into the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.
Garner died in July 2014 after an apparent chokehold by New York police officer Daniel Pantaleo during an arrest of Garner for selling untaxed cigarettes.
A grand jury on Staten Island decided not to charge officer Pantaleo.
The case has been in the hands of the U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn, but now the federal investigation into the case is in the hands of the FBI and the civil rights division of the Justice Department in Washington.
Joining us is Richard Frankel, a former FBI agent who oversaw the federal investigation of the Garner death when it started.
His last assignment was special agent in charge of the Newark office. He retired earlier this year and is now a contributor to ABC News.
Finally, with one week of campaigning left, how close is this race? Can we believe the polls?
So many Clinton supporters wonder why she's not ahead by double digits, while Trump supporters believing there's no way with their passion, Trump can lose.
