New studio uses science and technology to refine your workout
Amy Freeze introduces you to a new studio that uses science and technology to refine your workout.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- There is more to getting a good workout than just lifting weights or doing cardio.

There's a lot of science involved, and technology once just available to professional athletes is now more widely available.

A bit of physics and a camera might be the secrets to the smartest workout in town.

Brynn Putnam started Refine in the West Village because she wants a better way to get results. Instead of focusing on fat loss and scales, the former dancer turned to science and technology to create the smart workout.

"We learned how the body moves and changes and then we designed our equipment around that," she said.

Refine uses unique equipment, including a special pulley sytem designed at MIT, to work muscles efficiently.

We spoke with women who take the class 2 to 3 times per week.

"This workout helped me get in shape to have a baby and recover after the baby," said Kylie McNamara. "I'm in the best shape of my life."

Kathleen Lewis started coming when she got engaged. 18 months later, she's ready for her wedding next week.

"I feel like I'm walking taller, I'm more confident, I lost 25 pounds and two dress sizes," she said.

They also used video to improve your form, so you get the most out of your workout.

Megan Murdock, who calls herself a visual learner, says it does help to refine form.

"In my lunges, it measures the angle of my front knee and so I can see if I'm going too far which is dangerous for my knee, to help me get a better alignment," said Megan.

The theory that using science to correct movements basically adds up to quality exercise and real life results.

"We focus on the progress you're making in mastering some key exercises and when you master those, you can work out stronger and harder. So that translates into better results," said Brynn.

Also unique to Refine is your attendance, which helps lower the cost of the class.
