NEW YORK (WABC) -- Storms packing heavy downpours and high winds moved through the New York area Wednesday afternoon, toppling trees and leaving thousands of people without power.

Wind gusts of up to 40-50 miles an hour brought trees down onto cars and houses in parts of northern and central New Jersey.

Police say a tree fell onto a parked car in Newark, but no one was injured.

In Wood-Ridge, a tree came down at the intersection of Anderson Avenue & Berger Street, taking down power lines and causing a minor power outage.

In Bloomfield, a tree was completely uprooted and just missed falling onto two houses.

High winds also brought down several trees in South Brunswick, forcing closure of some local roads.

Power outages in the town resulted in traffic lights being out on Route 1, causing major backups. PSE & G worked throughout the evening to repair damage to four utility poles.

The storms also pounded Long Island, where high winds toppled a tree on the side of a road in Ronkonkoma.

The branches took down some electrical wires, knocking out power to part of the neighborhood.

A section of Smithtown Boulevard was closed to traffic while utility crews made repairs.

Over 7,000 customers were left without power throughout New Jersey, and over 1,300 on Long Island.

A Paris to Newark Delta flight was forced to land at Logan Airport in Boston because of strong winds in the New York area.

The airline said a small number of passengers suffered nausea and minor injuries.
