NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting after one man was killed in the parking lot of a strip mall in Newark.
The call came in before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the 300 block of West Market Street.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots from inside a nearby urgent care center.
No one inside was injured, but everyone hit the ground when the gunfire erupted.
"We didn't see what was happening," said one witness. "We were on the inside and when the shots were fired we all hit the floor. When we came out everything was done happening."
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said a male victim was killed in what police are classifying as a homicide.
It is still unclear if the victim was the intended target or an innocent bystander.
Police shut down West Market Street between Littleton and First for the investigation.
No arrests have been made and the motive for the murder is not yet known.
