Family of man who died at Brooklyn Stop and Shop calls for store boycott
FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (WABC) -- The family of a suspected shoplifter who died while being restrained by workers at a Stop & Shop renewed their call to boycott the grocery store.
Their announcement comes after the Medical Examiner ruled the death of Ralph Nimmons was a homicide.
Nimmons' family rallied Saturday outside the Stop and Shop in Flatbush, Brooklyn, the location where the 51-year-old died last April.
The medical examiner says Nimmons went into sudden cardiac arrest after he was restrained and kept in a prone position at the store.
Nimmons was also suffering from hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
"The penalty for doing anything wrong in the store is not death. This is not right, and they should pay," said the victim's uncle, Bonzelee Nimmons.
No one has been charged.
Stop & Shop released the following statement:
"We remain saddened by the unfortunate event that took place at our Flatbush store on April 14, 2018 and are continuing to cooperate fully with law enforcement. Now that the Medical Examiner's report is complete, we await the outcome of the District Attorney's ongoing investigation."
