PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn (WABC) -- For a local grocery in Fort Greene, this particular Saturday is vital for its financial health.

It may not seem like cheese and bread are your typical hot ticket items on a Christmas wish list, but Small Business Saturday is that day - nestled in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For the Green Grape Provisions, and so many other small businesses, this day matters.

"It's definitely important for people to come in and recognize all the hard work that goes into it," said Ralph Salby.

Small businesses are the engine of this city and nation, making up almost 45% of employment. This season accounts for almost 30% of their revenues. That is why city officials hosted a walking tour through Clinton Hill and other Brooklyn neighborhoods on Saturday to highlight hidden gems.

"From the hardware store to the toy store, to not only the wine shop, we want to make sure that businesses know that this is a healthy and long corridor," said Commissioner of NYC Department of Small Business Services Gregg Bishop.

So as we have heard time and time again, these small businesses make up the fabric of our city. So just like Christmas trees and carolers, officials say remember to keep them a part of the holiday season.
