"Shop Small" theme of holiday festival in Brooklyn
Mallory Hoff has more from Park Slope.

PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn -- Another Black Friday is in the books, but are the days of frenzied holiday shopping coming to an end? This year, retail sales on Black Friday fell 10 percent because of online deals. Online sales, in fact, surged 14.3 percent.

However, while many may have skipped the Black Friday crowds, on Saturday, some people did head out to support their local shops for "Small Business Saturday"

Residents of Park Slope, Brooklyn told Eyewitness News that they recognized the importance of small businesses in the community, and came out to show support. In an event called 'High Five for the Holidays', the neighborhood gathered for a tree lighting.

Park Slope is the epicenter of the 'shop small' movement. On Fifth Avenue, there are more than 500 independent shops, bars and restaurants.

"Communities like this make Brooklyn great, and make people want to live here. Small business is a big part of that," said Michael Carr.
