Northport barber retires after 52 years
Dray Clark reports on a famous Northport barber retiring after 52 years of cutting hair.

NORTHPORT, N.Y. (WABC) -- To be a good barber, you have to be precise, professional, and personable.

Richard Pastore has mastered his craft with a steady hand, shaving, cutting, and trimming.

But after 52 years of cutting hair in Northport, Pastore has decided to pull the plug on his long career of mane management.

"It's been very emotional the past two months," he said.

He told his customer's two months ago, today would be his last day.

"I really don't want to leave. It's just time. I need some time," he adds.

Pastore started cutting hair in 1962.

His haircuts have never cost more than $3.50.

But most customers gladly pay more.

"I love our town and he's part of it. He's one of the guys," said Anthony Inguilia.

lanzilotta has been coming to the barbershop for 20 years. His sons have been coming since they were born.

Pastore says a good haircut and a great conversation is a secret to success,

"I talk all day to people. Its like being at a party that never ends," he said.

But 52 years of 15 hour days would take toll a on anyone.

But Pastore says this is the life he wanted, a job that allowed him to make people look good and feel good for a mere $3.50.

"My customers are all over the place including the city of New York," adds Pastore.

So what's next, Mr. Pastore says he'll relax and then travel the world without a pair of clippers and scissors.
