Frank Lampard has spoken of his pride at being the first player to score a hat trick for New York City FC.

The 38-year-old's triple inspired a 5-1 win over Colorado Rapids, which consolidated NYCFC's position at the top of MLS' Eastern Conference standings.

"Really happy, I didn't realize that," said Lampard. "I know it is a very short history but it's a great accolade for me as a person. I'm very happy and when I'm playing well, feeling good, obviously I can score goals, I've manage to do since I've been fit."

Lampard's haul means he now has eight goals this season, all of which have been scored in the last nine games. He acknowledged that impressive form but also spoke of his pleasure that NYCFC had bounced back after losing the New York derby to the Red Bulls six days earlier.

"To get the three goals personally feel great but, for the team more importantly, twice now in recent weeks we lost a game and come straight back the next week and won," said Lampard. "And that's what team who wants to stay on top of the table must do."

Lampard captained Patrick Vieira's side at Yankee Stadium in the absence of David Villa and enjoyed the added responsibility.

"David's our captain and does a very good job, not just on the pitch where he scores a lot of goals and leads us from the front, but off the pitch," said Lampard. "I think it is important for all the players to show their leadership and, having been around a long time, playing for a long time with great captains and as a captain myself at times, I tried to use the experience to help today and I think everyone performed well today."

Meanwhile, NYCFC midfielder Jack Harrison, who set up Lampard's second goal, paid tribute to his veteran teammate.

"He showed true leadership out there as the captain," said Harrison. "We needed him out here today and he's a key part of our success as a team. He's been a great mentor to me and to see him do so well now he's scoring goals, it's a big accomplishment and I hope it continues going forward."
