Mets pitch in to deliver Thanksgiving meals to less fortunate families
NEW YORK (WABC) -- With one week until Thanksgiving, the New York Mets partnered with Fresh Direct Thursday afternoon to package Thanksgiving meals and deliver them to 50 families in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.
"We're having a lot of fun putting everything together," said general manager Sandy Alderson. "It's a great team building exercise for us, but we're really happy that we're going to be able to make a difference for 50 families."
Pitchers Zack Wheeler and Vic Black joined Alderson and over 30 front office personnel in packaging the food at Citi Field and then making these deliveries in person.
"Anytime you can help people out this time of year by putting food in their belly or just putting a smile on their face, that means the world to some people," Wheeler said.
In addition to the meals, each family also received tickets to a Mets game next season.
"With the season of giving upon us, we have a responsibility as a team and organization to give back to the many New Yorkers that are hungry and in need," said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. "We hope our small part can help bring awareness and inspire others to give back to the community we live in."
