Shaun Draughn agrees to one-year deal with Giants
The New York Giants agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent running back Shaun Draughn, his agent, Sean Stellato, told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Draughn, 29, spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers. He has also played for the Chiefs, Ravens, Chargers, Bears and Browns.
The Giants backfield now consists of Draughn, Paul Perkins, Shane Vereen and Orleans Darkwa. Last year's starter Rashad Jennings was released last month and Bobby Rainey is a free agent. The team could still look for another running back in the draft without a clear-cut feature back on the roster, even if Perkins' role is expected to increase greatly in his second professional season.
After finishing 29th in the NFL last season in rushing offense, the Giants entered this offseason looking for a makeover on the cheap at the running back position. They re-signed Darkwa -- after declining his restricted free agent tender for $1.8 million -- before adding Draughn to the mix. They haven't been serious players for any of the top running backs on the free-agent market.
Draughn (5-11, 205) brings some versatility -- he caught at least 25 passes each of the past two years -- and an ability to run between the tackles. He scored six touchdowns for the 49ers last season, with four rushing and two receiving.
The journeyman running back has appeared in 57 career games. He has 225 carries for 723 yards (3.2 YPC) and seven touchdowns with six different teams.
