NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Statue of Liberty is shining brighter than ever before - and has become much more energy-efficient.

The statue's new LED lighting system was activated Tuesday at sundown.

The old lighting was badly damaged by flooding during Superstorm Sandy. Temporary lights have been in place since then.

The new, permanent system will cut energy consumption by more than 60 percent.
