Connecticut boaters rescued from burning vessel

PORT JEFFERSON (WABC) -- Suffolk County police rescued two boaters from Connecticut after their vessel caught fire in the Long Island Sound Sunday.

Marine Bureau Officers Matt Funaro and Dave Goldstein, aboard Marine Delta, were dispatched after a 911 caller reported the fire, approximately four miles north of Port Jefferson Harbor, at approximately 1:50 p.m.

When officers located the boat, a 40-foot Formula 400 SS, its two occupants were at the bow and flames and heavy smoke were emanating from the stern.

The officers assisted the occupants, 50-year-old Cary Cieciuch and 42-year-old Kevin Totora, both of Stratford, aboard Marine Delta.

The officers administered oxygen to Totora and transported the men to shore. Once on shore, Cieciuch and Tortora were both treated for smoke inhalation by personnel from the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance.

Firefighters from the Port Jefferson Fire Department, assisted by members of the Mount Sinai and Setauket Fire Departments, extinguished the fire. Sea Tow, a commercial marine towing company, towed the boat to shore.
