DIX HILLS (WABC) -- Police on Long Island are searching for the gunman who shot a man through the front door of a house in Dix Hills.

Residents of the upscale neighborhood are uneasy after learning what happened on Friday night.

Police say around 9 p.m., a man was shot after answering a knock at the front door of a home on Melrose Road.

The victim is 27-year-old Louis Speaight of Virginia who was visiting the homeowners when the shooting happened. He was shot once in the chest, and was rushed to Huntington Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The biggest question for police is determining the motive - they still do not know. Even though the attack does not appear to be random, neighbors say when they saw all the police activity, they knew something was wrong, but this was not what they expected.

"It's bizarre, it blows my mind. I really have no idea what it could be, you know, and it scares me a little bit," said Jeff, a Dix Hills resident.

Police say the suspect fled on foot. Officers
