NEW YORK (WABC) -- An SUV lost control and hit a man sitting on a bench inside of Tompkinsville Park in Staten Island.

David Craig, 57, was sitting on a park bench when the accident stole his life. Police said charges are likely pending for the driver responsible for his tragic death.

The driver of the car that struck Craig has been identified as 25-year-old Oriamor Benson. She's charged with driving while ability impaired, or DWAI.

A Navy veteran born and raised on Staten Island, David Craig was waiting for a bus near Tompkinsville Park when police said the driver of an SUV suddenly collided with another car making a left near Bay Street and Victory Boulevard. The SUV violently jumped the curb.

"He was waiting for the bus, sat down on the bench, and what happened after that I have no idea except that he got crushed by a car," Edward Craig said, the victim's father.

A phone call from hospital staff alerted Edward Craig to his middle son's death. "He was a bachelor and he was a veteran, and he had his own way of life," his father said.

"All of a sudden we heard it was a loud noise, we seen the SUV come busting through the fence we didn't realize there was a gentleman on the bench," said John Childs, a witness.

One eyewitness said when he heard the loud impact of the crash he rushed over to help, but feared it was too late.

"We looked down and seen another pair of legs and there was another gentleman lying there," Childs said. "I send my sympathies out to the family, I'm very sorry."
