BRIDGEPORT (WABC) -- Police in Connecticut are investigating an accident that killed a college student from Long Island.

20-year old Kaitlyn Doorhy, a student at Sacred Heart University, died Saturday after being hit by a car as she crossed a road in Bridgeport Friday.

Police say it appears the driver swerved to avoid another woman, but ended up hitting Doorhy.

She was from Southold, Long Island.

A spokeswoman for Saint Vincent Medical Center said Saturday that the parents of Kaitlyn Doorhy had given permission to confirm the death of their daughter. Her organs are being donated for transplant.

Police said Doorhy was crossing Madison Avenue behind another woman Friday afternoon. A preliminary investigation found the driver swerved to avoid hitting the other woman and struck Doorhy. The driver has not been charged.

The junior from Mattituck, New York, was majoring in political science and belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority.

University president John Petillo said on the school's website a memorial service would be held on campus next week and counseling was being offered to the community.
