MOUNT VERNON (WABC) -- A Mount Vernon man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash that killed his passenger Monday.

Hasani Ewan, 38, of South 12th Avenue was arraigned on the misdemeanor charge from his bedside at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was admitted following the one-car accident that occurred at 1:41 a.m.

Authorities say Ewan was driving eastbound on the Cross County Parkway in Yonkers when his 2001 Honda Accord left the roadway and struck a bridge abutment to the Seminary Avenue pedestrian bridge.

His passenger, 44-year old Elouise Spears of the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the accident is continuing and upgraded charges are possible.

Ewan is scheduled to appear in Yonkers City Court on Sept. 16.
