Problems with MetroCards frustrates commuters
Michelle Charlesworth has more from Penn Station.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Thousands of commuters heading in to New York City Monday found out their MetroCards do not work. According to the MTA about 7,100 LIRR ticketholders and 2,800 Metro-North ticketholders are affected.

The MTA said anyone with the problem can show their Metrocard to a station agent or bus driver

The MTA issued the following statement:

"Due to a technical issue with the Mail & Ride Unlimited MetroCard portion of the December Monthly Ticket - the MetroCard portion will not work on New York City Transit. For the remainder of today, customers can show their monthly ticket to a subway station agent to pass through the turnstiles or to a bus operator to board a bus. We advise that tomorrow, customers should purchase a new 30-day unlimited-ride MetroCard from a New York City Transit vending machine or station agent. Mail & Ride customers who receive an unlimited monthly MetroCard as part of their ticket will be issued a credit for $119 to their Mail & Ride account for the month of December to cover the cost of the new monthly MetroCard plus any additional MetroCards and surcharges they may have had to purchase for today. We recognize this is an inconvenience; we appreciate your patience and apologize for the error. If you have any questions, please contact railroad customer service by calling 511 from within New York State or 877-690-5114 from Connecticut."
