MEBANE, N.C. -- Over 100 vehicles were involved in a series of accidents on I-40 in North Carolina Sunday evening, shutting down the interstate for hours. At least 21 people were taken to local hospitals.

According to the Alamance Fire Department, the first accident happened around 5:45 p.m. in Graham. There was a total of nine accidents, seven going west and two going east on the interstate from exits 147 and 153 in Alamance County.

The cause of the accidents are still under investigation, but there were severe storms moving through the area at the time. The interstate finally reopened shortly before 11 p.m.
