Is NYC about to put the brakes on Uber?
Lucy Yang has the details from the Upper West Side.

UPPER WEST SIDE (WABC) -- The hugely successful Uber car service has grown exponentially. In New York City they add about 500 drivers per week. However, the city is about to put the brakes on the popular app.

"My wife takes Uber, but we can't let them become like Walmart," says Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.

Councilman Rodriguez is sponsoring two bills - the first one is to study congestion. The second bill is to put a 1% cap on Uber's growth, which would translate to only 200 more cars for all of next year. This would mean longer waits and higher surcharges for riders.

"A few years ago, no one heard of Uber, now there are more of those vehicles and yellow cabs in New York City," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Mayor de Blasio favors the bill, but critics worry that it has nothing to do with congestion, and all to do with protecting yellow cabs and the medallion owners who give money to Mayor de Blasio. Uber does not make any political contributions.

Uber says they would welcome a conversation with Mayor de Blasio to address any issues he may have with their service and growth but the mayor today said he does not debate private corporations calling Uber a multi-billion company that puts profit first.
