UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A driver has been arrested after jumping the curb and crashing on the Upper East Side on Friday night.

Police say they were in the process of initiating a stop with a suspect in a car around 96th Street and Lexington Ave. As police approached him, the suspect fled.

For a short time, the suspect was in the counter-flow of traffic, and crashed, landing on top of the sidewalk in front of 128 East 85th Street, where he struck a canopy. There is no word on if there is any damage to the building.

Police say the suspect then jumped out of the car, and was apprehended a short time later by police. The suspect is in custody, and charges are still pending.

No injuries were reported during the pursuit.
