Woman dies after being struck by cab on Upper East Side

Pedestrian struck and killed by taxi on Upper East Side

UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) -- Police say a woman in her 70s has died after being struck by a cab on the Upper East Side.



The accident happened at 2:44 p.m. Saturday in the middle of 60th Street and Madison Ave.



The woman's purse was found in the ground, along with several pearls that were strewn about the street after the tragic accident.



According to witnesses, the woman, identified as 76-year-old Amelia Sterental of Miami, Florida was struck by the cab and may have been dragged. The cab driver stayed on the scene, and was questioned by police. At this point, the driver has not been charged.



Police say the driver was making a left, and the woman was in the crosswalk when she was struck.



EMS confirms the woman was brought to New York Hospital in cardiac arrest, and was later pronounced dead.



No further details were available, but police are still actively investigating.



East 60th near Madison by Barney's is closed off to all pedestrians and traffic at this time.
