WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (WABC) -- A suspect is in custody after gunfire struck a school bus in Washington Heights Monday morning.
Police say weapons were recovered and charges are pending. The incident happened near 164th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
The shots were believed to have come from either a window or fire escape from a nearby building. It is not clear who or what the gunman was targeting.
Three 9mm shell casings were found at the scene. One bullet hit a window, while a second flattened a tire.
Only the 48 year old driver and bus matron were on the school bus at the time.
The bus makes stops for two schools and transports 13 children, some with autism.
The driver, Irvin Mendez, was on his way to make his first pickup when he unknowingly drove into the gunfire.
"When he called me, I knew he was okay. The first thing I ask is how are the kids, he said it's not kids here," said Mendez's wife Dulce.
Police cleared the building as they moved in to arrest the shooter. Officers arrested three people, the alleged gunman and two women.
