Flood advisory issued for parts of New Jersey as heavy rains soak area

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for parts of New Jersey after a morning of heavy rain in some areas.

The advisory for minor flooding in poor drainage areas was issued for Morris County, northeastern Monmouth County, northeastern Somerset County, and northeastern Middlesex County.

In Newark, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose advised motorists to avoid many streets that are expected to be flooded.

Ambrose warned that drivers could become stranded by driving through flooded streets and high water.

Meteorologist Jeff Smith said nearly two inches of rain fell in a short time in parts of Newark.

Authorities responded to a call of a motorist stuck in about three feet of water on Wilson Avenue and Avenue L in Newark.

Newark police say the following locations should be avoided due to flooding conditions or the potential for flooding:

--Clay Street and McCarter Highway

--South Street and VanBuren Street

--Jefferson and Chestnut Streets

--State Street near Broad Street

--Jabez and Backus Streets

--357 Wilson Avenue

--Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street

--Magazine Street and Avenue L

--Avenue L and Wilson Avenue

--Ferry and Foundry Streets

--Norfolk Street

--Orange Street

--Nesbitt Street

--McClellan and Frelinghuysen Avenue

Meteorologist Lee Goldberg says there may be sleet further north.
