NEW YORK (WABC) -- Cold weather is bearing down on the New York City region this week, prompting communities to open warming centers and causing water main breaks.

The AccuWeather forecast is calling for temperatures to remain below freezing through the New Year holiday.

Most of the area is experiencing temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s with wind chills in the low teens.

As an apparent result of the cold weather, a water main break was reported Wednesday morning in Passaic, New Jersey, near the intersection of State Street and Aspen Street. Crews are out working to repair that break.

On Long Island, Nassau and Hempstead officials announced they're opening up 20 warming centers across the county to help people stay out of the elements.

Many other warming centers have been opened in New York City and across the region. To get warming center information for your city or town, contact your local officials.

In Manhattan, the real sign of frigid temperatures is the frozen fountain at Bryant Park. Take a look at its state as of Wednesday afternoon:

Officials are urging anyone who goes out into the cold to bundle up. At the current temperatures, any exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes or less.

The bitter cold can also be tough on your car. Rob Nelson has details on the steps you can take now to avoid a breakdown.
