Utility crews from NY area head to Florida to help restore power knocked out by Irma

IRVINGTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- Hundreds of thousands of customers were left without power in Florida Sunday morning as a result of Hurricane Irma.

Utility crews from the Tri-State area were packing up their supplies and heading south to help get everyone back on the grid.

PSEG is sending 154 people to help with the relief efforts and repair power infrastructure that could be damaged by Irma.

11 people and 5 trucks were set to leave from Irvington, New Jersey Sunday morning, heading to the Jacksonville Florida area.

About 60 crews from Con Ed and Orange & Rockland set out for Tampa.

Crews said they are happy to help the people of Florida considering the help given to New York and New Jersey following Superstorm Sandy.

The length of their stay will depend on the extent of the damage, but the crews are expected to be in Florida for at least several weeks.
