YONKERS, N.Y. (WABC) -- Two girls are being treated for serious injuries after police said a driver mixed up the gas and brake pedals, striking the girls in Yonkers Monday.

The incident happened in front of the U.S. Post Office on Main Street.

Yonkers police said the driver of the car was pulling into a parking space and was tapped from behind. That caused the driver to hit the gas instead of the break, sending the car up on the sidewalk. The car ran over a parking meter and hit two girls on the sidewalk.

Here was the view from NewsCopter 7:

The girls were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
