The fire started just before 5 a.m. in a building on Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park housing two businesses.
As many as six businesses sustained smoke and fire damage.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Residents who lived above the businesses were evacuated.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
