The incident happened Tuesday afternoon shortly after 3:00 p.m.
"All people locked down are asked to exit the closest exit," the Town of Wallkill Police Department said.
Authorities say they assisted in doing a sweep of the mall and nothing was found to substantiate the claim of a person with a gun.
It has since been reopened to the public.
Police say the mall had several hundred customers and employees in the mall at the time.
No injuries were reported.
Police credits the mall staff were going so smoothly because they train for it and have done evacuation drills.
