Witnesses say moments before shots were fired there was a heated verbal exchange.

"They were just shouting. You know what I'm saying? He was arguing with her," one witness said.

"'Give me my money, give me my money, I will shoot you, I will shoot you,'" witness Jordan Alzoubi said. "And then he pulled out his gun and started shooting people."
A 52-year-old woman was shot in her leg, meanwhile the 44-year-old woman was shot at least three times in the leg, arm and stomach, according to police.

The two women did not know each other. The 52-year-old woman was waiting for the bus and the other woman ran around the corner not realizing she was shot until later.

Witnesses say the argument started inside a bank and then spilled out into the street.

The gunshots sent people scrambling. Some ran for safety into a store.

"I had to close the door to keep everybody safe," Amir Igbara said.

Igbara owns a business near East 188th Street. He says he heard the gunshots and knew right away it was gunfire.

"When I came out, I saw a lady and she was looking at her leg. She was shot in her leg," he said.

Both women were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the younger woman was the intended target. It's unclear what their relationship is.

The suspect, a man in his 40s with gray hair, wearing a white sweater, ran away south on Grand Concourse.
