Police say the suspect went around the mother to stab the child, Kase Snowe, in the back.

Snowe just celebrated his birthday two days ago and his mother says her son has been asking why someone would do this to him.

"At first I thought it was a punch until I saw the knife and the blood, I just picked him up and started screaming for help," Keiara Lawhorn said.

He suffered a stab wound to his kidney and was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.

He may need a blood transfusion and surgery to release the fluid in his stomach. He remains in the ICU under 24-hour watch and doctors are watching him closely.

The suspect, 26-year-old Jesus Felix, is charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

He lives just a block away and was arrested after a relative saw him cleaning a knife.

It is not yet clear whether Felix knew the child.
