Officers discovered a 37-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County where he was pronounced dead.
The victim's mother identified him as Nazim Berry. She says he grew up nearby and lived with his grandmother since he was 5 years old.
According to his mom, Berry worked at a deli where the shooting took place, and has worked there for a "long time." She says he cleans the store.
Berry's mom said there was a dispute after the suspect asked her son to buy him a Black and Mild cigar. When Berry told him no, the suspect left and returned with a gun.
The victim's mother described him as a good person with a good heart.
"I knew that it had to be over something stupid because I know his heart," she said.
Police say the suspect, who fled on foot, was wearing a black and gold sweater.
