Police said the person they shot was not a robbery suspect, but was the person who lived in the home.
Authorities say the 78-year-old pointed a gun at responding officers but they don't know why.
"I can tell I observed the body camera, he clearly charged at the officers with his gun, we do not know why though, when they initially got to the apartment, they did not have their guns drawn," Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.
The man was taken to Woodhull Hospital in very critical condition and was pronounced dead.
The officers, assigned to the 81st Precinct, were checked out but were not injured.
Police said there were no prior interactions with the man who died.
Few other details were released.
