Your mom may have been on to something when she told you to eat your vegetables. A new study suggests that concentrated broccoli sprout extract can help Type 2 diabetes patients manage their blood sugar.

Over 300 million people worldwide suffer from type 2 diabetes.

Up to 15-percent of suffers unable to take first-line therapy because of the risk of kidney damage.

Metformin is typically prescribed to people to manage their type 2 diabetes.

According to a finding from Swedish researchers, broccoli could be an alternative for those who can't take Metphormin.

During a 12-week trial, 97 type 2 diabetes patients were given concentrated broccoli sprout extract.

Obese study participants who entered the trial with dysregulated disease showed a significant decrease in their fasting blood glucose levels.

The authors of the study suggest that using a similar approach to their broccoli research could be a good strategy for future research to identify compounds that fight disease.
