Fire engulfs Brooklyn lumber storage warehouse

Tuesday, February 21, 2023
WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Large plumes billowed from a 4-alarm fire at a commercial building in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

The fire started in a one-story lumber storage building at 335 Hewes Street around 10:51 a.m. and spread to a 3-story commercial building, officials said.

"There is a lot of stock within these buildings and that's what's taken so long to extinguish these fires. It's a heavy load of combustibles," Chief John Hodgens said.

More than 200 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene.

Five firefighters suffered minor injuries. There were no occupants in the building.

The smoke could be seen from miles away, located near the elevated subway tracks that run above Broadway.

The fire burned for hours, not placed under control until after 5:00 p.m.

The cause is under investigation.
