Here and Now on May 14, 2023: Negative impacts of racism on black women's physical, mental health

Sunday, May 14, 2023
NEW YORK (WABC) -- On this episode of Here and Now, we talk to Dr. Melody T. McCloud about how the risks of illnesses, like heart disease, can be higher for black women.

She says racism has a large effect on black women's mental health.

Even negative media imaging and colorism can have negative impacts on the physical health of black women. Those stressors can increase cortisol levels, which can cause illnesses and adverse side effects, Dr. McCloud says.

She encourages everyone to make health a priority.

Our instinct to take care of others first is selfless, but Dr. McCloud suggests we put ourselves first when it comes to health and wellness.

Then, we talk to representatives from Harlem Grown, a program that helps healthy children grow through the power of fruits and vegetables.
