LINDENHURST, Long Island (WABC) -- A man was seriously injured when he was shot in his car while driving on a Long Island highway over the weekend in what police believe was a case of road rage.

It happened around 2 p.m. Sunday on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst.

Authorities say the 24-year-old victim was driving a Buick sedan eastbound on Sunrise Highway, near Straight Path, when he was shot.

Suffolk County police say the victim's car and another car were cutting each other off when they both stopped at a traffic light.

"They said the subject tried to cut them off, and then when they tried to cut him off again, they wouldn't let him in," Suffolk police Lieutenant Shaun Spillane said. "So everybody stopped at the traffic light at Straight Path, and then when traffic proceeded, they said the suspect pointed a gun out the window and fired a single shot at them."

Spillane said bullet entered through the victim's driver side door and struck the victim in the abdomen, with the bullet lodged near his spine

The man's passenger called 911, and the victim was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

The passenger, also 24, was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing, and Spillane said investigators are reviewing surveillance video and looking at video from the red light cameras to see if they can get a better description of the vehicle.

All they know now is that the suspect was driving a sedan.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
