It happened around 8:30 a.m. on Route 3 in East Rutherford during the height of the morning commute.
Police say they received a call of a Brinks armored truck spilling cash across the western lanes. At this point, it appears the armored truck had a malfunction of one of its doors, causing it to become unsecured.
Video shows drivers exiting their cars to collect the money, which authorities say led to multiple motor vehicle accidents.

It is unknown how much money ended up on the roadway, but authorities say anyone who pocketed it is considered a thief -- and Brinks wants it back.
"It's theft of mislaid property," East Rutherford police Detective Lieutenant Mike Gianscaspro said. "So we're not looking to charge anybody, we're just looking to get the money back to Brinks."
Authorities were seeking videos of the incident, to track down both those who possibly stole cash and people involved in the accidents.
"We can confirm that there was an incident with one of our trucks this morning, which we are investigating," Brinks told Eyewitness News in a statement.
Detectives are investigating, and anyone with information or video of the incident is urged to call police at 201-438-0165.
East Rutherford police also said several individuals have contact them to return money. The department is advising people who have money connected to this incident to call 201-438-0165 to make arrangements for its return with no charges filed.
Detectives continue to investigate photographic and video evidence at this time.
