New York City opens 3 health centers in low-income neighborhoods

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- New York City on Tuesday opened its first three Neighborhood Health Action Centers, providing everything from medical services to maternal care to HIV/AIDS services.

They are all located in low-income neighborhoods with high rates of disease and premature death.

Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio, Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett and New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito were on hand to officially open the East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center, located at 158 East 115th Street.

Two other Action Center sites in Brooklyn and the Bronx marked partial openings, with the Tremont Neighborhood Health Action Center located at 1826 Arthur Avenue and the Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center located at 259 Bristol Street.

All three will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city also unveiled a multimedia campaign to promote new services available.
