It happened around 9:20 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and Summit Street in Newark, near the campus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The victim was struck by a red SUV that appeared to be a Jeep or Ford Explorer, which fled the scene, and then another car.
That driver stopped and called for help.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Naomi Segura, of Byram Township, was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where she later died.

Martin Luther King Boulevard was shut down in both directions for the investigation.
The investigation is active and ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

"I am deeply saddened to share the news that NJIT student Naomi Segura has died following a motor vehicle collision last night. The incident occurred near the intersection of Central Avenue and Summit Street at roughly 9:20 pm on Tuesday when Naomi was struck by a vehicle that proceeded to leave the scene. If anyone witnessed or has information pertaining to this incident, I ask that you please contact Detectives Collins or Quinn from NJIT Police at 973-596-3111. Our sympathies are with Naomi and her loved ones during this incredibly sad time. A senior from Byram Township, NJ, majoring in Law, Technology, and Culture, Naomi was deeply involved in NJIT's Murray Center, and professional staff will be present in the Center's offices on the second floor of the Campus Center throughout the day until 5 pm in order to offer support to those in need. I also encourage students seeking emotional or other support to contact the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services in Campbell Hall, Room 205.
